Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Drug abuse remains a significant social issue in Nigeria, with devastating effects on individuals, families, and communities. Sabon Gari LGA in Kano State is no exception, with a growing concern over the rising incidence of drug abuse among the youth. Public service advertising (PSA) has emerged as a key tool in addressing social issues, including drug abuse. PSAs are designed to educate the public, raise awareness, and encourage behavior change through mass media channels. According to Abubakar and Bello (2023), PSAs have been used in various parts of Nigeria to combat drug abuse by highlighting the dangers associated with drug use and promoting healthier lifestyles. This study investigates the effectiveness of public service advertising in tackling drug abuse in Sabon Gari LGA, focusing on how such campaigns influence awareness, attitudes, and behaviors related to drug use.
